Arizona 1 Goldback -Virtue: Temperentia (Temperence)

Set in the desert landscape of early 1800s southern Arizona,  honors Temperantia (Temperance), the virtue of balance, harmony, and quiet strength. Behind her rises Mission San José de Tumacácori, a historic landmark of faith and culture during Arizona’s Mexican era.

At the center stands a graceful woman in an embroidered 19th-century Mexican dress, symbolizing the union of Indigenous, Spanish, and Mexican traditions. Around her, desert life flourishes with the saguaro blossom, cactus wren, two-tailed swallowtail, tortoise, and javelina, all emblems of endurance and resilience. Corn, chiles, and prickly pear celebrate the land’s bounty and the families who cultivated it. Above, a Harris’s hawk soars through the sky, representing focus and harmony. This design reflects Mexico’s lasting influence on Arizona’s spirit of faith and community.
