The South Dakota 50 Goldback contains 1/20th Troy Ounce of 24K Gold. This note is part of the first-ever voluntary, spendable gold currency, ideal for both collectors and everyday fractional gold use.
Design: Libertas, the capstone Virtue on all 50 Goldback denominations, appears in the South Dakota Series, inspired by D.C.'s Lady Freedom statue. She holds a raised sword and shield, symbolizing readiness to defend. The shield features her name, the South Dakota sun, and the state motto: “Under God the People Rule.” Her helmet, sword, and shield are drawn from Roman goddesses Minerva and Bellona.
