La escena muestra a una madre guiando a su hijo a través de un terreno abierto. Las agujas de granito de la Ciudad de las Rocas se alzan al fondo, que guiaban a los emigrantes en el Sendero de California. Detrás de la madre y el niño, una carreta cubierta arrastra a un grupo a través del sendero. La fauna nativa los rodea: un lagarto de artemisa, un berrendo y un búho cornudo. La mujer sostiene una pequeña Biblia como símbolo de fe personal.
