The Great Britain Silver Britannia is one of the world’s most recognized silver bullion coins, celebrated for its iconic depiction of Britannia, a symbol of British strength, resilience, and integrity that has appeared on coinage since Roman times. Beginning in 2021, The Royal Mint enhanced the reverse design with advanced security features, including surface animation, a latent image, tincture lines, and micro-text, providing greater protection against counterfeiting while preserving the coin’s classic appearance.
Introduced as a gold bullion series in 1987, the Britannia program expanded to include silver proof coins in 1997 and silver bullion issues in 1998. Silver Britannias minted from 1998 through 2012 were struck in .958 fine silver, while bullion coins issued from 2013 onward contain .999 fine silver. Today, the series is produced annually in a variety of gold, silver, and platinum formats, with both Brilliant Uncirculated and limited-mintage Proof versions available.
Random-year Silver Britannia coins are selected based on current inventory and may feature varying dates, designs, privy marks, or special finishes. Depending on the year of issue, coins may be struck in either .958 or .999 fine silver.
